The Top 20 for 2019

It’s that time of year—specifically, the end of the year—to take a look back at The Family History Guide’s year in review. Here are 20 accomplishments, ranked from 20 to 1 (yes, in a somewhat arbitrary scale):

20 – Help pages for Online Tracker Groups & Reporting

In the Online Tracker, help pages were added for the Groups feature (creating report groups) and Reporting (running reports against the Online Tracker for Groups). The help pages are access by buttons in the header area.

19 – Additions to the Online Tracker

Online Tracker categories were added for U.S. states, Canadian provinces, English counties, and a number of new Project Goals and Choices. Exercises were also added in many cases to support the Online Tracker slider bars.

18 – Links for 150 small countries

The Countries page now has an expandable list with links for about 150 countries. These countries are more limited in their information, and so do not have their own individual country pages.

17 – Bronze-Level Sponsorship at RootsTech 2020

The Family History Guide Association will have a Bronze Sponsorship at RootsTech 2020, which means a prime booth location in the Exhibit Hall and expanded advertising. The booth location is #933.

16 – Misc. Consultant Tools

A number of slide decks, handouts, and other tools were added to the Resources page in the Trainers menu.

15 – The Stars Project

Star icons now appear next to each article and video link in The Family History Guide. When logged in to the Online Tracker, you can click a star to fill it in, signifying that you have read the article or watched the video for the step.

14 – Ancestry DNA updates

Pages were added and updated for the new features in Ancestry DNA, such as ThruLines™, matching tools, ethnicity maps, etc.

13 – The MyHeritage App

A Project was added for the MyHeritage App. There are seven Goals in the Project, ranging from Tree Navigation to DNA Test Results.

12 – Additional QUIKLinks

Hundreds of new QUIKLinks were added for record collections in FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, and Findmypast. These cover countries around the world, in a variety of research categories.

11 – Display Pages

There are now 5 categories of printable display pages for The Family History Guide. You can find them in Intro > Media on the website.

And now for the Top 10 …

The Leadership page contains slide decks, handouts, and tips for using The Family History Guide in wards and stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It’s located in the Faiths menu, under Church of Jesus Christ.

9 – Improved mobile formatting

Accessing The Family History Guide on mobile phones is now a smoother experience, with improved formatting and layout of content.

8 – Knowledgebases for Countries & Research

You can find out facts and tips for country and general research in the two new Knowledgebases. The General Knowledgebase is found in the Partner menus, and the Countries Knowledgebase is at the bottom of the Countries menu.

7 – FamilySearch Family Tree and Memories Apps

The Project  for the Family Tree app contains seven Goals and 29 Choices, while the Project for the Memories app contains six Goals and 19 Choices.

6 – Redesign for Countries page and menu

The Countries page now features an alphabetical list in columns for quick country-page location. The drop-down Countries menu now has regional sections that can be opened to navigate to specific countries in those regions.

5 – Home page update

The Home page for The Family History Guide has a simpler and more colorful look. There is one large background photo now, with a focus on the three main buttons (Overview Video, Get Started, and 15 Minutes a Day) and social media platforms.

4 – Show Me Videos

There are now 16 Show Me videos on our YouTube, with more on the way. Each Show Me video guides you through a Goal in The Family History Guide, with screen shots and cursor movements to guide you.

3 – Come, Follow Me Companion for 2020

Just launched, the 2020 version of the Come, Follow Me Companion for family history has several lessons published, and more will follow throughout the year. You can find it in the Faiths menu, under Church of Jesus Christ.

2 – Get Started & 15 Minutes a Day

The new Get Started page features a new tiled layout, with pictures and links to helpful sections in The Family History Guide to get you successfully started on a path that interests you. The 15 Minuts a Day page has helpful suggestions and tips for progressing in your family history in as little as 15 minute a day. Both pages can be accessed from the Home page or from the Intro menu.

1 – Pass-along Cards

Pass-along cards for The Family History Guide are 3.5 x 2 inches, or the size of a double business card. They have summary information about the website and a space where you can write contact info. There is a pass-along card version for the main website, and another for the Come, Follow Me Companion. You can print your own pass-along cards from the website or order them from The Family History Guide Association.
