According To Kids…

How do kids feel about family history activities? Well, watch our newest video on The Family History Guide YouTube Channel (and on this post) to find out! Kids will tell you that family history activities are fun, easy, and by doing them you find out that ancestors are awesome! According to kids, family history activities don’t have to be boring! You can try them at home. You are going to love them! They help us remember that we are all part of a big family. Family History activities make our families stronger and united. When we learn about our ancestors, we love them more.

Some favorite activities highlighted in the video are Charades, Family History Fruit Basket, The Human Knot, and The Family History Fun Basket. You can see how all these games are played by watching videos on our YouTube Channel and you will also find descriptions in the Activities Section of The Family History Guide. The Kids Corner lists a myriad of ideas to make family history come alive for the smaller humans in our lives!  These activities are written TO kids and not to parents and leaders ABOUT kids. Note, however, that there is a note to parents and leaders for every section. The description of the KIDS CORNER reads:

This is your place for family history fun!
* Learn about your family tree, your parents’ and grandparents’ lives, and about other ancestors.
* Play cool games and discover some great activities for family history.
* Try this page out, and share the ideas and activities with your siblings, cousins, and friends!
* You can find more activities in the FamilyIndividuals, and Youth pages of The Family History Guide. When you need help, be sure to ask your parents, a leader, or a family member you know.
Enjoy!

PS We would love to hear what family history activities your children and grandchildren are enjoying and where you live in this big world of ours!  Please share in the comments.  Thank you!

  1. That is why some family tree programs have an option called, “Other Parents that can be filled in. So you can be listed with your actual BIRTH parent names,, and their ancestors/ yours as well. AND, then the names of your adoptive parents, family, etc. and their ancestors if you so wish to do so. Or other names that you know they went by, or what ever reasons they chose to CHANGE the name. Yes, it is hard at first, starting out. You only know you Mom and Dad”s names. May know your grand parent names, but from then on back it is REAL challenge to find that data. Either interviewing your parents, as you would for a school project, and not all will be willing to give out more information. May have to go around them, as I did. Many wonderful stories are lost this way when parents will NOT TALK about their life as young adults, or teenagers, a young child, or about their parents and their home life. Best for your continued research.
