Update: 1950 U.S. Census and FamilySearch

As you may know, volunteers have recently been busy indexing records from the 1950 U.S. Census to get them ready for posting on FamilySearch and other sites. In a new development, computer technology is now handling an increased role in the indexing efforts, so volunteers can cover more ground.

Here’s the announcement from FamilySearch:

“FamilySearch and Ancestry have evaluated the indexing review results to date and have made changes to reduce the number of fields reviewed by volunteers!

Of the 70 fields that were previously being reviewed, only 12 will be reviewed by volunteers as the project continues. The remaining 58 fields will now be reviewed through an alternative method, thanks to the accuracy of Ancestry’s handwriting recognition technology.

New! Thanks to these changes, the process to review families is now much easier than before. Try the new experience to Review Families today!

Reviewing names is now 60% Complete! Thanks to your ongoing efforts, the full name review is now 60% complete, up 10% in the past week!

Thanks again for your participation. It’s amazing what we can accomplish together!”

  1. The process has been very well managed and it’s been fun. I’ve found records of friends and family from 1950, including me when I was four years old.
