The Faiths Menu in The Family History Guide

We are proud to announce the arrival of new web pages for several faiths and their associated family history resources. On May 30, we created a “Faiths” menu in the place of the “LDS” menu that was previously there. The new drop-down menu looks like the example shown at the right:

The “LDS” option is pretty much the same as before: it goes to the LDS page, with its familiar Goals and Choices. The “Jewish” option is the same as what you see when you select “Jewish” from the Ethnic section on the Countries page. The new options—”Catholic” and “Protestant”—are described below.

Catholic Page

The Catholic page has Goals and Choices for family history using Catholic resources and records.

(Note: We are also looking for material to add a Greek Orthodox section to the Catholic page.)

Goal 1: Learn about Catholic family history

This Goal has Choices with links to articles that help you find resources for working on Catholic family history. It also points you to dioceses where you can write to obtain further information on genealogy.

Goal 2: Explore Catholic research and record collections by country

This Goal points you to the Church Goals listed in county pages in The Family History Guide, where Roman Catholic records and resources are prevalent. There are quite a few QUIKLinks to record collections in FamilySearch and Ancestry available on these pages.

Protestant Page

The Protestant page has Goals and Choices for family history using Protestant resources and records.

Goal 1: Learn about Protestant family history

This Goal has Choices with links to articles that help you find resources for working on Protestant family history. There are Choices for the following denominations:

  • Baptist
  • Episcopal
  • Lutheran
  • Methodist
  • Presbyterian
  • Other (Congregational, Quaker, Church of the Brethren, Reformed Dutch)

Goal 2: Explore Protestant research and record collections by country

This Goal points you to the Church Goals listed in county pages in The Family History Guide, where Protestant records and resources are prevalent. There are quite a few QUIKLinks to record collections in FamilySearch and Ancestry available on these pages.

Other Faiths

We’ve been asked about including other world faiths on our site, such as those in the Middle East and Orient. The challenge is finding record collections and resources for these faiths. (For example, FamilySearch and Ancestry have few collections for world religions.) As we continue to explore the possibilities, we are open to adding world faiths to our page.
