Getting the Help You Need

Family history is one of the most rewarding activities we can do, partly because it is so multi-faceted. Where else could you get immersed in family relations, history, geography, culture, migration, and much more, all pieced together into one mosaic? But all of that beautiful complexity may come with a sizeable learning curve for many of us. Fortunately, The Family History Guide can help with that, and here are some of the its tools to assist you on your family history journey:

Family history platforms: You can learn almost any aspect of FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, or Findmypast by using the Learning System built into The Family History Guide. Show-Me videos are also available for many of the Goal pages, illustrating important navigation and user tips.

Help Projects: For example, here are some of the Goal pages in FamilySearch Project 6 (Help):

  • Get Help—Find the help you need with FamilySearch and its partners, as well as with your own research tasks.
  • Genealogical Societies—Learn how these organizations can support and help you with your family history objectives.
  • Collaborate—Get tips on working with others on genealogy tasks and projects.
  • Help Another Person—Learn about ways you can help others with their family history efforts.

Research Basics and Principles: In Project 4: Discover you can get the solid foundation you’ll need for research, with a well-organized collection of articles and videos to help you in each aspect.

Get Help, Country and State Pages: The final Goal page for most countries and U.S. states is “Get Help.” Among other things, these Goals direct you to Facebook pages, message boards, and genealogical societies you can reach out to for help with your research. And of course, there are many other Goals to guide you through doing research in your local area of choice.

DNA Projects: In the DNA Projects you can get the following kinds of help:

  • Introduction to genetics
  • Advice on choosing a DNA test
  • Tips on interpreting test results
  • Ideas for working with your cousin matches
  • Tips for adoptees and DNA research
