Facebook and The Family History Guide

These days, Facebook has become a go-to choice for collaborating on family history. The Family History Guide is an active player in the Facebook world, sharing the joys of family history.

Here are some of the ways we are involved with Facebook:

Main Page

Our main Facebook page is approaching 2,000 likes and follows, from many locations around the world. Each Friday we post a “Did You Know?” feature that highlights interesting facts about The Family History Guide and research. Also, many of our weekly blog posts are reprinted here for convenience. Check out the video for “The Human Knot” that runs at the top of the Facebook page.

Trainers/Consultants/Directors Group

Our Facebook Group for family history Trainers, Consultants, and Directors is growing fast. It’s a great place to mingle with those involved in family history training, and you can reach the Group link in the Trainers menu in The Family History Guide.

We have added the following weekly features to the page:

  • Monday Mindshare—Respond to a question or poll on an interesting family history topic.
  • Tuesday Training Tips—Enjoy a timely tip to help boost your effectiveness in family history training.
  • Wednesday Welcome—Join with us in welcoming the newest members in the Group.
  • Thursday Thoughts—Ponder inspirational ideas about family history work and how it is changing the world for the better.

Resources

The Social Media Goal in The Family History Guide has links to articles and videos on using Facebook for family history. Also, most of the Country pages and all of the U.S. State pages have a “Get Help” goal that provides links to Facebook Groups for areas of family history research and support. One of these resources is Katherine Willson’s “Genealogy on Facebook” list that has

  • 13,200+ genealogy/history links
  • 183 countries
  • 2,100+ surnames
  • 50+ categories (ethnicities, religions, adoption, DNA, military conflicts, lineage societies, etc.).

For those who are new to Facebook, The Family History Guide has links to excellent Facebook tutorials, in the Computer Basics section. It covers topics such as
