10th Anniversary of The Family History Guide

It’s finally here: Friday, July 25, 2025 marks 10 incredible years for The Family History Guide! It has been quite a journey, and we are beyond grateful for the amazing support we have received from family history enthusiasts around the world. We have site vistors from over 150 countries, and The Family History Guide is featured in the Portal for all 5,000+ FamilySearch centers worldwide.

To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we’d like to share a retrospective of important events and milestones in the story of The Family History Guide. Thanks for helping us make a difference in global family history!


Feb. 2014 – Sandy Granite Family History Center opens; Bob Taylor called as a family history consultant, Bob Ives called as Technology Director.

Dec. 2014 – Bob Taylor begins work on a new website to help people find answers to family history questions.

Mar. 2015 -Bob Ives and Bob Taylor set up The Family History Guide LLC.

June 2015 – First public demo of The Family History Guide given at the Sandy Granite Family History Center.

June 2015 – Demo website presented at the UVTAGG conference in Provo, Utah.

July 2015 – Website officially released at the BYU Family History Conference with a presentation and booth.

Late 2015 – The Family History Guide added to the Portal in FamilySearch centers.

Feb. 2016 – First RootsTech and Innovator Showdown (semifinalist), with booths and a speaking slot.

Feb 2016 – First meeting with FamilySearch to explore collaboration opportunities.

May 2016 – First BYU Family History Library webinar on The Family History Guide.

Sep. 2016 – New mobile-friendly web design introduced in Beta.

Nov. 2016 – Meeting with Elder Bradley Foster, and Diane Loosle and Steve Shumway of FamilySearch.

Nov 2016 – New web design launches for the site.

Dec 2016 – Advisory Board formed for The Family History Guide L3C, with staff members added.

Feb 2017 – RootsTech with expanded booth size and 40 mini-classes offered.

Apr 2017 – The Family History Guide Association formed as a Utah nonprofit corporation, with a Board of Directors.

Aug 2017 – Partner pages for the website (Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast) enter beta stage.

Sep 2017 – Activities pages launched in The Family History Guide.

Oct 2017 – The Family History Guide Association approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity.

Feb. 2018 – Exhibitor at RootsTech 2018 with an expanded booth size of 600 sqf and a general session speaking slot.

Apr 2018 – Embedded videos are introduced on pages of The Family History Guide.

May 2018 – Faiths Menu added to the website.

Jan 2019 – The Come, Follow Me Companion (later Weekly Family History Activities) introduced on the site.

Feb 2019 – Exhibitor and presenters at RootsTech 2019 with an additionally expanded booth. 

Mar 2019 – Research Knowledgebases added to The Family History Guide.

Jul 2019 – Passalong cards (3×5 in.) for the site are introduced.

Oct 2019 – Exhibitor at RootsTech London (inaugural event), represented by Scott and Angelle Anderson.

Feb 2020 – Exhibitor at RootsTech and placement as a Sponsoring Organization. Over 1200 attendees at the Introduction to The Family History Guide presentation.

Mar 2020-2022 – Multiple presentations and training via the Internet during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Jan 2021 – Quick Research Basics (QRB) videos introduced on our YouTube Channel.

Feb 2021 – Beginner’s Path introduced on the home page of the site.

Mar 2021-2022 – RootsTech virtual booth presence, with RootsTech reaching over one million participants. Multiple Zoom platform presentations to wards, stakes, genealogical societies, and public libraries.

Jan 2022 – Spotlight videos added to our YouTube Channel.

Oct 2022 – The Family History Guide presented at the WikiTree International Conference.

Mar 2023 – Major presence as a Sponsor with a 600-square-foot booth at RootsTech 2023.  “Introduction To The Family History Guide” and other presentations by other staff members and BOD members at RT 2023.

May 2023 – Record Search Practice Exercises are introduced on the site.

June 2023 – Invited as an exhibitor at the National Genealogical Society national conference in Richmond, Va.

Sep 2023 – Class Outlines are introduced on the site.

Mar 2024 – Major presence at RootsTech 2024 with 600 sqf show booth.

Sep 2024 – Online Tracker Sheets introduced on the site.

Mar 2025 – Major presence at RootsTech 2025 with over 800 sqf show booth.
