Goal 4: Search Historical Records



Goal 4: Search historical records.


You can find historical records on FamilySearch that provide evidence for events in your ancestors' lives.


Choices


ASearch for historical records.


  1. In the three-bar menu, select Search Historical Records.
  2. Fill in the name of the person to search for.
  3. To learn about how to do effective record searchs, tap Tips for Effective Searches.
  4. To include additional information for the search, tap More Options. The following choices are available:
      .
    • Add Ancestor Information—Specify an alternate name or the sex of the person.
    • Add Life Event—Specify birth, marriage, residence. or death information for the search.
    • Add Family Member—Specify a spouse, father, mother, or other person to include in the search.
    • Add Record options—Specify Location, Type, Batch Number, or Image Group Number or Film Number; and
      b) Type the information for each event.
    • To cancel an event or information item from being included in the search, tap its link again.
    • If you want to limit the records you find to exactly the search terms you are using, tap the "Show Exact Search" slider.
  5. Click Search. For steps on handling search results, see Choice C below.
  6. To find a particular record collection to search,
    a) Scroll down to the Find a Collection area (bottom of screen);
    b) In the Collection Title field, type the name of the collection you want; and
    c) Select it from the drop-down list. You can also tap "Browse all published collections" and search that way.
  7. To do research by location,
    a) Scroll down to the "Search by Place" section (bottom of screen);
    b) Type a place in the search field or tap Browse Places and then View All Places;
    c) Scroll to the region you want and select a location (or tap a "Show All" button more choices;
    d) Fill in the search fields (you can use a "More Options" button if available); and
    e) Tap Search. You can select from Indexed Historical Records, Image-Only Historical Records, or Catalog Material.

C Use search results effectively.


  1. In the Search Results screen, view the entries and find one that seems to match the ancestor you are looking for. A brief sample is shown here. In the right column you can tap Events to switch to viewing information about Relationships, and tap Relationships to switch back to events.
  2. In the Name column, tap the person's name. A window opens with additional information about the record.
  3. Tap the three-dot circle (upper right) to display the following action options:
    • Review Attachments—See Choice B in Goal 3: Sources and Record Hints for details.
    • Add to Source Box—See Choice A in Goal 3: Sources and Record Hints for details.
    • Copy to Clipboard
    • Print
    • Email
  4. To examine the record image, if available, tap the magnifying glass icon. You can also tap the link titled "View the original document." For more information on these options, see Choice A in Goal 3: Sources and Record Hints.
  5. You can tap Review and Attach Record (bottom of the screen). For more information, see Choice A in Goal 3: Sources and Record Hints.
  6. To learn more about the record collection, tap the Info button.
  7. To learn more about document you are viewing, tap the down-arrow (right side). This displays citation information, and there is a link to view similar historical record (if available).
  8. To refine your current search and try again, tap Refine your search (top of screen), fill out the fields, and tap Search.
