Teaching FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, or Findmypast

Help learners develop skills in using these essential family history platforms.

About

Setting up classes or learning modules with The Family History Guide is a breeze—especially when you want to help others learn FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, or Findmypast. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Check out the Goal pages listed below to see possible topics to teach, and how many to cover in a session. These pages link to step-by-step instructions, as well as article and video resources, for using the four main family history platforms. This material can also be found in the Learning Paths menu of The Family History Guide. For additional material, see Other Resources below.
  2. Decide on the material to cover in the class or presentation. Then walk through the material in The Family History Guide links to prepare to teach it. You can use the steps, the resource articles or videos, or both.
  3. Open the The Family History Guide link for the material you wat to teach and walk through the steps or articles on the screen.
  4. If the class is taught in a computer lab, decide how you want to manage hands-on practice. Learners can open The Family History Guide in one browser window and the website for FamilySearch, Ancestry, etc. in another. That way they can see instructions and try the concepts on the selected website.
  5. Note the Exercises links in The Family History Guide, at the end of each Choice. You can use your own exercises in place of the ones on the site if desired.
