A Come, Follow Me Companion

2021: Doctrine & Covenants

Week 8: February 15–21

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Doctrine and Covenants 14-17 —"Stand as a Witness"

Doctrine and Covenants 14

I can participate in God's "great and marvelous work."

From Come, Follow Me :

How can you "thrust in [your] sickle"? (verse 4). Notice the promises given throughout this section to those who "seek to bring forth and establish ... Zion" (verse 6).

Celebrate Missionary Heritage

What do you know about your missionary heritage? Do you know the answers to these questions about their missionary service?

  • Who is the missionary that taught the first convert in your family?
  • Who was the first missionary on your family tree?
  • What is the farthest one of your ancestors traveled to serve a mission?
  • What is the longest amount of time one of your ancestors served on a mission?
  • If you could go to the same mission your ancestor went to, where would it be?
  • What languages did your missionary ancestors learn?
  • What miracles occurred on your ancestor's mission?
  • Do you know descendants of converts your ancestors baptized?
  • Do you have a picture of an ancestor on a mission?
  • Can you find a copy of one of your ancestors' mission calls?
Don't worry if you don't know all the answers—we're here to help! Check out these database research tips to help you fill in the blanks!

To celebrate the missionary heritage we all share, see missionary stories, tips, and activities, explore the Church History Database (mentioned above), and see Missionary Journals and Letters.

Doctrine and Covenants 14:7

Eternal life is "the greatest of all the gifts of God.

From Come, Follow Me :

As you read Doctrine and Covenants 14:7, ponder why eternal life is "the greatest of all the gifts of God." This insight from President Russell M. Nelson might help: "Under God's great plan of happiness, families can be sealed in temples and be prepared to return to dwell in His holy presence forever. That is eternal life!" (Thanks Be to God, Ensign or Liahona, May 2012, 77).

Find Those Who Need Temple Ordinances

Elder Neil L. Andersen advised at RootsTech 2015, "These are your days. You were born in a time of temples and technology. These are your days to more fully turn your hearts to your fathers and bring these saving ordinances to millions within our families. These are your days to prepare for the Second Coming of the Savior."

See Temple Opportunities in The Family History Guide for step-by-step instructions, guidelines, and information for finding those who need temple ordinance proxy work and proceeding to do the work for them. Plan time with your family to find those in your family lines who need ordinance work done. Pray to find them.

Make a plan to act; consider family or ward members that can help you. Plan a temple trip. See also Latter-day Saint Youth: Take Ancestors To The Temple in The Family History Guide, and In-Home Activities to Help You Prepare for the Temple.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World

Read The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and discuss the Lord's plan for eternal marriage and eternal families.

As you study and discuss these teachings, consider reading The Family: A Proclamation to the World aloud, recording it for your living family and uploading this recording to FamilySearch Memories for generations to come.

Each family member could take turns reading a paragraph including younger children (even if they need help) and this could be both audio and video recorded.

You may want to memorize The Proclamation as a family. You may also want to have family members sign a copy of the Proclamation to display in your home and possibly share on social media, along with your feelings about marriage and family. Find free printable memory cue cards here—
Memorize The Family: A Proclamation to the World. You could also create your own cards with visual memory cues, or simply divide the proclamation into sections and put them (page-by-page) into a notebook to use.

Creating a book with family pictures correlated to parts of The Family: A Proclamation to the World would make a beautiful gift and heirloom to pass on.

Doctrine and Covenants 15–16

Bringing souls unto Christ is of great worth.

From Come, Follow Me :

John and Peter Whitmer both wanted to know what "would be of the most worth" in their lives (Doctrine and Covenants 15:4; 16:4). Have you ever wondered about this for yourself? As you read Doctrine and Covenants 15–16, ponder why bringing souls to Christ is of such great worth. How can you invite souls unto Christ?

See also Doctrine and Covenants 18:10–16.

It is our responsibility (and joy) to gather Israel on both sides of the veil.

Along with the resources and activities found in the "Find Those Who Need Temple Ordinances" section above, here are some more suggestions:

Fulfillment of Promises in Your Life

"As you study your scriptures during the next six months, I encourage you to make a list of all that the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel. I think you will be astounded! Ponder these promises. Talk about them with your family and friends. Then live and watch for these promises to be fulfilled in your own life." (President Russell M. Nelson, Let God Prevail, October 2020 General Conference)

Suggestion for journaling this week: Find the promises in Doctrine and Covenants 14–17 and write or audio-record about their influence in your life.
