A Come, Follow Me Companion

Week 6: January 31–February 6
Old Testament

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Genesis 6–11; Moses 8

“Noah Found Grace in the Eyes of the Lord”

Genesis 6; Moses 8

There is spiritual safety in following the Lord’s prophet.

“We have some tight places to go before the Lord is through with this church and the world in this dispensation, which is the last dispensation, which shall usher in the coming of the Lord. The gospel was restored to prepare a people ready to receive him. The power of Satan will increase; we see it in evidence on every hand… We will see those who profess membership but secretly are plotting and trying to lead people not to follow the leadership that the Lord has set up to preside in this church.

“Now the only safety we have as members of this church is to do exactly what the Lord said to the Church in that day when the Church was organized. We must learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through his prophet, ‘as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me; … as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.’ (D&C 21:4–5.) There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord himself, with patience and faith, the promise is that ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory.’ (D&C 21:6.)” (Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, Oct. 1970). Click here to read the full talk.

From Come, Follow Me

What are prophets teaching today about the gospel of Jesus Christ that could keep you safe in today’s world? As you read about Noah’s experiences, what inspires you to follow the Lord’s prophets today?

President Nelson: “My dear brothers and sisters, the assaults of the adversary are increasing exponentially, in intensity and in variety. Our need to be in the temple on a regular basis has never been greater. I plead with you to take a prayerful look at how you spend your time. Invest time in your future and in that of your family. If you have reasonable access to a temple, I urge you to find a way to make an appointment regularly with the Lord—to be in His holy house—then keep that appointment with exactness and joy. I promise you that the Lord will bring the miracles He knows you need as you make sacrifices to serve and worship in His temples.” Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints

Promised Blessings

One of the promised blessings that is listed in this activity is that of "increased protection from temptations and the intensifying influence of the adversary" which exemplifies Genesis 6 and Moses 8. Read more here. The activity starts out without mentioning how the blessings are received - that will be the conclusion of the activity.

Copy each of the blessings listed below on small pieces of paper and put them into a basket. In a group or as a family, take turns drawing them out one-by-one and discussing the reasons why you would want that particular blessing in your life.

After the discussion activity, ask, "What one thing can we do to have these incredible blessings in our lives and in the lives of those we love?" Refer to Elder Renlund's talk: Family History and Temple Work: Sealing and Healing.

"If you have prayed for any of these blessings, participate in family history and temple work. As you do so, your prayers will be answered."

The Youth Temple Challenge

The following activities and resources can help church members of all ages to find family names to take to the temple and to help others find names, too!

In a presentation at RootsTech 2014, Elder Neil A. Anderson gave this challenge to the youth:

He invited the youth to accept it, accomplish it, and share it. The next year, at RootsTech 2015, he added to the challenge: "and help someone else do the same.”

Elder Anderson promised: "As you accept this challenge and teach it to others, I promise you that you will feel the beautiful link that binds us together as families through eternity. You will feel a happiness for those who accept your sacred offering. Your hearts will truly be turned to your fathers, and you will feel their hearts turned toward you. You will feel purpose and strength that will help you to avoid the temptations that surround you. You will better see the unseen—the eternal things that the world does not see.

As you add this work to your righteous life, the gift of the Holy Ghost will be a stronger influence upon you. Your belief in and appreciation of the Savior will increase. You will better understand the power of His Atonement and you will be safeguarded from the distractions that can so easily pull you from His commandments."

Weekly Family History Activities: A Come, Follow Me Companion

From Come, Follow Me

What else has God given us that might be compared to the ark that saved Noah’s family?

If you are reading this, then you already know that the Weekly Family History Activities: A Come, Follow Me Companion can bless you and your family in a multitude of ways. Check out the suggestions on the home page to make using it a part of the weekly flow of your lives.

President Nelson: “The new home-centered, Church-supported integrated curriculum has the potential to unleash the power of families, as each family follows through conscientiously and carefully to transform their home into a sanctuary of faith. I promise that as you diligently work to remodel your home into a center of gospel learning, over time your Sabbath days will truly be a delight. Your children will be excited to learn and to live the Savior’s teachings, and the influence of the adversary in your life and in your home will decrease. Changes in your family will be dramatic and sustaining.” Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints
