* Youth  |   Family  |   Individuals  |   Kids Corner

Family history activities are a way to get to know those who have gone before, write about their lives, and to learn from and be inspired by their experiences. Family history activities are also a way to connect with living family members, create and write your own family history, and make fun memories. Check out the Youth section for additional resources and ideas.

6. Service Activities

Overview: You know that feeling you get when you do something for someone else that they can't do for themselves? Family history provides many varied opportunities to serve others. Try some of these ideas, and see what a difference you can make!

Activities marked by an asterisk (*) take little or no prep time.

Y6-01: Do Indexing as a Family
Do indexing as a family, so others will be able to find their ancestors in the records you index. To get started with web indexing, see Project 5: Indexing in The Family History Guide. Plan get-togethers with family and friends to multiply the fun! Check out this FamilySearch blog post for more help.

*Y6-02: Use The Family History Guide
You can help others learn to do family history by teaching them about The Family History Guide. See the menus at the top of each website page; or click on "Get Started,;" or use the Search bar for any questions you have. For example, if you want to teach others how to upload Memories to FamilySearch, go to FamilySearch Project 2: Memories and you'll find all the help you need. With The Family History Guide, you don't need to be the "library" ... you're just the "librarian!"

*Y6-03: Interview a Family Member (or anyone else)
Record, transcribe and post the interview in FamilySearch Memories, or on Ancestry, MyHeritage, or Findmypast (see the menus at the top of each website page in The Family History Guide). Also, check out 9 Tips for interviewing Relatives. See this blog post for additional ideas. Read about how to use the amazing FamilySearch Audio App to record and save family stories.

*Y6-04: Record in the Story Room
Reserve the Story Room of a family history center to record loved ones telling their story and answering questions. You can use the guidelines from the 52 stories project in FamilySearch to help you gather, preserve and share the stories you record during a year's time, week by week.

See how one family enjoyed an outing together, and made not only a great recording but a lasting memory! For a list of Family History Center locations, click here.
Y6-05: Give the Gift of Family History
You can be a big help to younger children to teach them how to love family history and find out that it isn't boring! Find games and activities in the FamilySearch Solutions Gallery and the Activities pages of the Family History Guide for families, individuals, youth, and kids. See these blog posts for ideas for family history gifts for everyone: Family History Gifts for Christmas, Think Family History Gifts for Mother's Day and Give the Gift of Family History.
