Family history activities are a way to get to know those who have gone before, write about their lives, and to learn from and be inspired by their experiences. Family history activities are also a way to connect with living family members, create and write your own family history, and make fun memories. Check out the Youth section for additional resources and ideas.


7. Activities for Research

Overview: Who knew that being a family history detective could be such fun? Finding clues, analyzing and documenting data, and locating people and places make for exciting adventures! Try sleuthing with your family ... become a detective team!


Activities marked by an asterisk (*) take little or no prep time.


*Y7-01: Have Fun with Apps
Gather the crew and have fun with these apps. (You will need a FamilySearch account and a family tree that has info on your ancestors.)
Relatives Around Me provides an easy way to find relatives within minutes. Long-lost cousins are no longer lost if they happen to be within 100 feet of each other and logged into the FamilyTree App at the same time.
Compare-A-Face is a new way to find out where you got your good looks (hint: it uses face recognition). All the Stories displays all the stories on your part of the tree in a searchable list and on a fan chart, after you log in to FamilySearch. It also includes information on how you are related to each ancestor who has a story. Caution: Do not open All The Stories if you have other things to do at the moment!

Find out how and why to build an ancestor profile. See the difference an ancestor porfile can make in your research.

Y7-03: Where Did Your Ancestors Live?
Use tips on land patents to discover and document where your ancestors lived. This can give you new insights into how and where your ancestors lived.

See where important events occurred in your ancestors' lives with Map My Ancestors. Click here for The Family History Guide instructions to use this app. Read The Family Tree App's Cool Features or What's New: Map Your Ancestors for additional information. Discover what you can find out about your ancestors.

Find out more about the area your ancestors lived with FamilySearch Places. Learn more at Research Your Family Tree Map with FamilySearch Places Tool and What's New: FamilySearch Places. Try typing in different places and see what you discover!


Y7-06: Scavenger Hunt: Learn about Your Ancestors
  1. Download the Scavenger Hunt document created by Familylocket.com.
  2. Log in to your FamilySearch account and click Family Tree.
  3. Look for ancestors in your family tree that match each of the clues. You will discover some interesting facts about your ancestors and also learn how to better navigate FamilySearch. (A FamilySearch account is required for this activity.)
