In 1804, Andrew Shortell left Dublin, Ireland to go to Boston. The name of the ship he journeyed on was "Atlantic." Use resources on the John Grenham site to answer these questions:

1. How old was Andrew at the time of his journey?
2. What was his occupation?
3. How many other passangers were recorded by name on the Atlantic?

• On the left-hand side of the screen, select the drop-down arrow for Emigration.
• Select Passenger Lists.
• Look down the list until you find the ship called "Atlantic" in the year 1804.
• Open the passenger list by clicking on the name of the ship. Andrew appears second from the bottom.

1. Andrew was 21 when he was on the Atlantic ship.
2. His occupation was a laborer.
3. There were 22 total passengers listed on the ship.

Nicholas Fitzsimon lived in Ireland in the year 1843. Family tradition states that he was involved in the police force in Dublin. Use "FS: Ireland, Dublin, The Post Office Annual Directory and Calendar, 1858" QUIKLink to answer these questions:

• On image 11 (page 9) of the contents, the bottom right hand side in the center column lists a page number for the Police of Dublin. Go to page 129 (image 71) where the police are listed and find Nicholas Fitzsimon's name.

1. Nicholas was a member of the Police of Dublin. Nicholas' position is listed under "Metropolitan Police Officer, Lower Castle Yard, Dublin" as "Knt." This is an abreviation for Knight.
2. Knowing the occupation of your ancestors could lead you to various other record types they may be involved in. These other records could provide you with more details about their lives and the important events they were involved in.
