A Come, Follow Me Companion

Week 46: November 7–November 13
Old Testament

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Hosea 1–6; 10–14; Joel

“I Will Love Them Freely”

Hosea 1–3; 14

The Lord always invites me to return to Him.

From Come, Follow Me:

As you read Hosea 1–3, ponder how the Lord views His relationship with His covenant people.

…“My dear brothers and sisters, as you choose to let God prevail in your lives, you will experience for yourselves that our God is “a God of miracles.” As a people, we are His covenant children, and we will be called by His name.” President Russell M. Nelson Let God Prevail

Now, how does the Lord feel about people who will let God prevail? Nephi summed it up well:

"[The Lord] loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he remember[s] the covenants which he [has] made." 1 Nephi 17:40

From the above video: “These are OUR Days, and WE are the Gatherers. I promise that as you consistently act and do the very simple things you know you should do, you will become ever more effective in the work of gathering Israel, and you will help many individuals and families on both sides of the veil. Your capability and service will be magnified. I promise the doors will open. Heavenly help will be available to you, and you will be blessed to know that you CAN do this. Your personal assurance will grow that the course of life which you are pursuing is in accordance with God’s holy mind and will.” Elder Bednar, Rootstech 2019

Finding Ancestors Who Need Temple Work

The dead are taught the gospel in the spirit world and may accept the ordinances performed for them in mortality. Read more here.

To find those persons in your family tree without the ordinances of baptism and confirmation, find step-by-step instructions in the Church of Jesus Christ section of The Family History Guide (specifically Temple Opportunities).

Pray to find your ancestors who are being taught the gospel in the spirit world so that God can inspire you to find their information needed for temple work. You will be helped to be successful. “You should not underestimate the influence of the deceased in assisting your efforts" Quentin L. Cook, Roots and Branches

When using Ordinances Ready, you can “learn more” about each ancestor before going to do their work.

You will be taken to their profile pages on FamilySearch to view your relationships and learn more. You can also record about your experience in FamilySearch Memories and tag your ancestor.

Joel 2

“I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh.”

From Come, Follow Me:

How can you increase your capacity to receive personal revelation?

President Nelson: “I renew my plea for you to do whatever it takes to increase your spiritual capacity to receive personal revelation. Doing so will help you know how to move ahead with your life, what to do during times of crisis, and how to discern and avoid the temptations and the deceptions of the adversary.” (read more here and see the video clip below):

From President Nelson’s message :

“Our Father knows that when we are surrounded by uncertainty and fear, what will help us the very most is to hear His Son. Because when we seek to hear—truly hear—His Son, we will be guided to know what to do in any circumstance.”

"I promise that as you increase your time in temple and family history work, you will increase and improve your ability to hear Him."

President Nelson: "I invite you prayerfully to consider what kind of sacrifice, and preferably a sacrifice of time, you can make to do more family history and temple work.” Open the Heavens through Temple and Family History Work

The 21-Day Family History Challenge

President and Sister Nelson invite all church members to make a sacrifice of time to do family history and temple work (see Open the Heavens through Temple and Family History Work). An idea to make this a reality comes from an address Sister Wendy Nelson.

She offered the invitation to busy, overburdened sisters to do some temple and family history work each day for 21 days and then to watch what happened. She was concerned that adding one more thing to their list of things "to do" would make them even more burdened but the opposite was true for all who participated. Even a few minutes per day helped them to see miracles in their lives and the lives of their families. Although this challenge was given to sisters of the church, it is applicable to everyone.

Here are the links to the PDF and the video of Sister Nelson's talk:

Discuss ideas and options and make a plan! Think about routines and traditions you can create. List your goals and record how you will work toward them.

You may also want to join the Facebook group for The Twenty-one Day Family Connections Experiment to do family history for 21 days, and select a plan to follow for ideas and motivation. Read more about it here.

The Add-On Method

Check out 5-Minute Ideas for Latter-day Saints. Consider the "add-on" method as you plan family history activities. Make a routine by adding an activity to a meal, bed-time, travel time, family prayers or scripture reading, etc. See also: Need a Time Filler? Think Family History!

Hosea 2:19–20

From Come, Follow Me:

The Lord used the metaphor of marriage to describe His covenant relationship with Israel …

From the introduction to this lesson:

Israel’s covenant with the Lord was meant to be so deep and meaningful that the Lord compared it to a marriage. The covenant, like a marriage, included eternal commitment, shared experiences, building a life together, exclusive loyalty, and most of all, wholehearted love...This is the same message He gives us today as we seek to live our covenants with love and devotion.

Covenant Marriage

Gather the family to share your family “falling in love” and marriage stories, or the stories of other living friends or leaders.. You can also remotely share this experience. Write these stories down or audio record them, add photos, and  upload to FamilySearch. Share photo albums, videos, and keepsakes. You could print the stories and place them in your home where they can be easily seen, and consider posting them on your family social media sites.

Celebrate The Marriages of Ancestors

Talk about the marriages of your ancestors. Find stories using the FamilySearch Fan Chart, the All The Stories site, or any of the resources in this list of 10 Ways to Find Ancestor's Stories. Check your relationships to them.
