For our Jewish friends and ancestors, this past weekend introduced the High Holy Days, with two of the most significant holidays on the calendar. Rosh Hashana was celebrated from September 18-20, and Yom Kippur will be coming up September 27-28.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a brief background for each of these holidays:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosh Hashana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6994 size-medium\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/rosh-hashana-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/rosh-hashana-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/rosh-hashana-768x569.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/rosh-hashana.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From Wikipedia: &#8220;&#8230; literally meaning &#8216;head [of] the year&#8217;, [Rosh Hashana] is the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jewish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish\">Jewish<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"New Year\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Year\">New Year<\/a>\u00a0&#8230; It is the first of the Jewish <a title=\"High Holy Days\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High_Holy_Days\">High Holy Days<\/a> specified by\u00a0<span class=\"nourlexpansion nowrap\"><a class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Leviticus+23%3A23%E2%80%9332&amp;version=NRSV\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leviticus 23:23\u201332<\/a><\/span> that occur in the early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day celebration that\u00a0marks the beginning of the civil year, according to the teachings of Judaism, and is the traditional anniversary of the creation of\u00a0<a title=\"Adam and Eve\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adam_and_Eve\">Adam and Eve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the\u00a0<a title=\"Shofar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shofar\">shofar<\/a>\u00a0(a cleaned-out ram&#8217;s horn), as prescribed in the\u00a0<a title=\"Torah\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torah\">Torah<\/a> &#8230; Its rabbinical customs include attending synagogue services &#8230; as well as enjoying festive meals. Its central themes are <a title=\"Atonement in Judaism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atonement_in_Judaism\">atonement<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Repentance in Judaism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Repentance_in_Judaism\">repentance<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Jews\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jews\">Jews<\/a>\u00a0traditionally observe this holy day with an approximate 25-hour period of\u00a0<a title=\"Ta'anit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ta%27anit\">fasting<\/a>\u00a0and intensive\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jewish services\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_services\">prayer<\/a>, often spending most of the day in\u00a0<a title=\"Synagogue\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synagogue\">synagogue<\/a>\u00a0services.<\/p>\n<p>Yom Kippur is &#8230; the &#8216;Sabbath of Sabbaths&#8217;.
