In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/blog\/en\/family-history-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0for FamilySearch, Rachel Coleman wrote:<i>\u00a0 <\/i>&#8220;The United States celebrates October as National Family History Month and for good reason. Knowing, recording, preserving, and sharing our family histories can provide countless benefits to individuals, families, and entire societies. Family history is more than pedigree charts, censuses, and birth dates\u2014it can be a powerful antidote against adverse life experiences that we face today, giving us a stronger understanding\u00a0of who we are and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-664 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/18486087_1525503987468983_6792226137724704804_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"164\" \/>motivating us to deepen our roots for generations to come.&#8221; She listed six reasons why we need family history now more than ever &#8211; core identity, connection, compassion, resilience, selflessness, and self-worth. Describing\u00a0the need for human beings to have\u00a0attachment,\u00a0belonging,\u00a0and connection, she quoted\u00a0a popular TED talk entitled,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/johann_hari_everything_you_think_you_know_about_addiction_is_wrong#t-202527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everything You Think You Know about Addiction Is Wrong<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0In this presentation, British journalist Johann Hari teaches that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it is\u00a0connection. Rachel added, &#8220;Connecting with members of our family past and present by learning their history fills an innate need in each one of us.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>As a grandmother (and certified family historian), I am always hoping to inspire my grandchildren to love family history as much as I do. I continually try to find ways to encourage\u00a0this to happen, so that they will reap the benefits of personal involvement in family history in their lives, and make it a life-long habit. I am convinced that as family history &#8220;comes alive&#8221; for them, they will experience the rewards and blessings hoped for.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/act-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Family History Guide Children&#8217;s Page<\/a> is my &#8220;go-to&#8221; place for an abundance of ideas and resources to help me in this quest with my younger grandchildren. For example, in the Memories category, I am drawn to the ideas and links for dressing-up like ancestors, hosting &#8220;look-alike&#8221; photo sessions, and role-playing their stories.\u00a0 I\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-663 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/18402554_1519744888044893_8487175661771218087_n-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" and lasting memories with my grandchildren as we have had fun together using these ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Many others feel as I do!\u00a0 See\u00a0<a re-enacted\u00a0was about Thomas\u00a0Rees and his miraculous healing in Wales where he was born in 1820.\u00a0Thomas Rees had not been a religious man, but this experience changed him and thus influenced his family for generations to come.\u00a0Because Thomas and Rebecca were poor, they sent their son to America at age 17 and he worked for years to earn enough money to bring the rest of his family members over from his homeland.\u00a0 When he\u00a0was younger (he is\u00a0now\u00a0age 22), our grandson, Scott, acted out this family history story about his 4th great
