Similar to July 4, many local and all state-run government offices<sup id=\"cite_ref-Legal_holidays_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and many businesses are closed on Pioneer Day.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">In addition to being an official holiday in Utah, Pioneer Day is considered a special occasion by many members of\u00a0<a title=\"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints\">The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>\u00a0(LDS Church).<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0On Pioneer Day, some Latter-day Saints walk portions of the\u00a0<a title=\"Mormon Trail\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mormon_Trail\">Mormon Trail<\/a>\u00a0or reenact entering the Salt Lake Valley by\u00a0<a title=\"Mormon handcart pioneers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mormon_handcart_pioneers\">handcart<\/a>.\u00a0Latter-day Saints throughout the\u00a0<a title=\"United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and around the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2938 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tahitian-Pioneer-Family-Plaid-580-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tahitian-Pioneer-Family-Plaid-580-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Tahitian-Pioneer-Family-Plaid-580.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>world may celebrate July 24 in remembrance of the LDS Church&#8217;s pioneer era, with songs, dances, potlucks, and pioneer related activities.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">While the holiday has strong links to the LDS Church, it is officially a celebration of everyone, regardless of faith and nationality, who\u00a0<a title=\"Emigration\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emigration\">emigrated<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a title=\"Salt Lake Valley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salt_Lake_Valley\">Salt Lake Valley<\/a>\u00a0during the pioneer era, which is generally considered to have ended with the 1869 arrival of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"First Transcontinental Railroad (North America)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Transcontinental_Railroad_(North_America)\">transcontinental railroad<\/a>. Notable non-LDS\u00a0<a title=\"American pioneer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_pioneer\">American pioneers<\/a>\u00a0from this period include Episcopal Bishop\u00a0<a title=\"Daniel S. Tuttle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_S._Tuttle\">Daniel S. Tuttle<\/a>, who was responsible for Utah&#8217;s first non-<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mormon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mormon\">Mormon<\/a>\u00a0schools (<a title=\"Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rowland_Hall-St._Mark%27s_School\">Rowland Hall-St. Mark&#8217;s<\/a>) and first public hospital (St. Mark&#8217;s) in the late 1800s.\u00a0The Intertribal\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Powwow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Powwow\">Powwow<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a title=\"Liberty Park (Salt Lake City)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liberty_Park_(Salt_Lake_City)\">Liberty Park<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Salt Lake City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salt_Lake_City\">Salt Lake City<\/a>\u00a0honors the cultural heritage and contributions of the area&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Native Americans in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States\">Native Americans<\/a>, helping Utahns to gain a deeper understanding of the region&#8217;s history&#8230;The centennial in 1947 and the sesquicentennial in 1997 were especially large celebrations in Utah. Monson, then second counselor in the Church\u2019s First Presidency, noted in 1988:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cThat first trek of 1847, organized and led by Brigham Young, is described by historians as one of the great epics of United States history. Mormon pioneers by the hundreds suffered and died from disease, exposure or starvation. There were some who, lacking wagons and teams, literally walked the 1,300 miles across the plains and through the mountains, pushing and pulling handcarts. In these groups, one in six perished.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mormonnewsroom.org\/article\/mormons-celebrate-their-pioneer-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mormon Newsroom<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Celebrating Pioneer Day by remembering those who sacrificed greatly to begin a new life in a new place can include fun activities of all kinds. Many years ago our family participated in a re-enactment of the pioneer trek while we were in Nauvoo, Illinois for a family reunion. Our grandchildren pulled hand-carts through creeks and rough terrain, listened to pioneer stories, and &#8220;sang as they walked and walked.&#8221; This experience gave them a flavor of what so many of our ancestors went through! Over the years, many family members have been <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2937 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Nauvoo-Trip-179-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Nauvoo-Trip-179-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Nauvoo-Trip-179-768x525.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Nauvoo-Trip-179-1024x700.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.thefhguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Nauvoo-Trip-179.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/>able to experience longer, more difficult pioneer trek re-enactments and we have all learned more about the sacrifices made to find a home where they could have the freedom to live as they believed. We love all of the stories we know of these courageous ancestors, and celebrating them is a fun tradition for us.
