A huge thank you to all involved &#8211; and thank you also to Joseph Ridges!<\/p>\n<p>In the video, Claribel talks about her heritage and how she was named for an &#8220;organ stop&#8221; and after two ancestors who were also named Claribel. Joseph Ridges is Claribel&#8217;s great-great-great-great-grandfather who built the original Tabernacle Choir organ. Principal organist Richard Elliott shows Claribel the organ stop that she is named after, which is called\u00a0 the \u201cClaribel Flute.\u201d\u00a0Here are a few paragraphs from the post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mormontabernaclechoir.org\/articles\/meet-a-young-descendant-of-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet a Young Descendant of Tabernacle Organ Builder Joseph Ridges.<\/a><\/p>\n<section class=\"image section\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<figure style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<div class=\"image-component\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"photo-border-thin lazy lazyLoadDone alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mormontabernaclechoir.org\/content\/dam\/motab\/blog\/2018\/03\/claribel-flute-organ-stop-blog.png\/_jcr_content\/renditions\/cq5dam.web.1280.1280.png\" alt=\"claribel-flute-organ-stop-blog.png\" width=\"356\" height=\"184\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"rich-text section\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">When ]Richard] Elliott asked Claribel what she knows about her ancestors who had a connection with the organ, she replied, \u201cJoseph Ridges lived in England as a boy, and his friend\u2019s dad was an organ builder. And the factory that the organs were made in was right across from his own house, and so he spent a lot of time there watching\u2014and he was self-taught because he was allowed to go into the factory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">She continued to explain how Ridges relocated from England to Australia in 1852, where he shipped timber, mined for gold, and worked on building an organ in his spare time. When Ridges finished the organ, it contained 7 stops and approximately 300 pipes. Ridges set it up at his house and was once quoted as saying, \u201cAs the tones filled the house and floated into the street, men and women came out of their home and stopped on the street saying, \u2018Great God, there is a church organ in there, and we have not heard one for years.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">As word of the organ spread, an elder from The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, which Ridges had recently joined, asked him to send the organ to Utah. Ridges\u2019 family, along with 120 Mormon immigrants and the carefully packed organ, left Sydney, Australia, in May 1856 and arrived in August. \u201cAnd then they had one wagon and four oxen pull it all the way to Utah,\u201d explained Claribel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section video\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<figure class=\"video\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<div id=\"vid1a478\" class=\"video-placeholder mediaLoaderElement mediaLoader--open\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<div class=\"media-placeholder\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/peqkLzHPPvo?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;wmode=transparent&amp;includeAPI=true&amp;templateLoadHandler=brightcoveLoaded&amp;height=444&amp;width=790&amp;isVid=true&amp;isUI=true&amp;dynamicStreaming=true&amp;bgcolor=%23fff&amp;htmlFallback=true&amp;wmode=transparent&amp;videoID=&amp;account=&amp;player=default\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-text section\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">When Ridges arrived in Salt Lake City, plans were already underway for the new Tabernacle. Brigham Young approached Ridges about building a similar organ, but on a much bigger scale to fit the new building. Although it would prove to be a challenge due to lack of railroad transportation and resources, Ridges responded by saying, \u201cYes, we can; we can do anything we put our minds to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">The Tabernacle organ as we know it today was the result of a trip Ridges took in 1863, while traveling to Boston to purchase metal pipes and various parts that were not available in Utah. While in Boston, he witnessed the organ that was being installed in Boston Music Hall, which influenced the design for the wooden casing of the now famous Tabernacle organ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Claribel discussed ancestors who shared her first name, including Ridges\u2019 daughter Claribel, who was very musical and performed in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as a soprano in 1891. She also mentioned her great-grandmother Claribel Farr.
