Here are a few interesting facts about Memorial Day, from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memorial_Day\">Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first national observance of what would become Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_National_Cemetery_System\">National Cemetery Administration<\/a>, a division of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Department_of_Veterans_Affairs\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a>, credits\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Ann_Williams\">Mary Ann Williams<\/a>\u00a0of the Ladies Memorial Association of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbus,_Georgia\">Columbus, Georgia<\/a>, with originating the idea of an annual date to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans with flowers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1968, Congress changed its observance to the last Monday in May, and in 1971 standardized its name as &#8220;Memorial Day.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two other days celebrate those who have served or are serving in the U.S. military:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Armed_Forces_Day#United_States\">Armed Forces Day<\/a> (earlier in May) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veterans_Day\">Veterans Day<\/a>\u00a0on November 11.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Researching Your Military Ancestors with The Family History Guide<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Family History Guide has some helpful resources for tracing your military ancestors in the United States.
